70 Years Ago Today : Pearl Harbor

There are very few places on Earth that don't have war or violence somewhere in their history. Perhaps there are none, wherever humanity has gone. But there are certain places where the record of the war is either written in the landscape, or where the memories of war have been carefully preserved. Because today is Pearl Harbor Day—I'm reminded not only of the bravery and sacrifice on the parts of both soldiers and non-combatants during this global conflict, but also of the sheer horror of … [Read more...]

McDonald Observatory Ft. Davis Texas Travel

A place located in the middle of nowhere can be hard to find under the darkest night skies. The McDonald Observatory located on Davis Mountain top in Ft. Davis, Texas was a welcome treat at the end of a long day in the hot West Texas  heat. Greg and I were quite tired after driving for 5 hours (from 5am) to get to Marfa, to spend the day touring the Chinati Foundation, and then driving an hour to Ft. Davis where we were to spend the night. Sure, we could have happily stayed in our hotel room … [Read more...]

Honeydukes Sweetshop at Wizarding World of Harry Potter —Orlando Florida Travel

One of the highlights of the holiday season for me is re-watching Harry Potter movies. This year, I'll be able to finally watch all of them (one after another?). If winter-time makes you think of Harry Potter and Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, you're probably also thinking about Hogsmeade and perhaps candy from Honeydukes?! On a recent trip to Orlando, Florida, Greg and I went to Universal Studios specifically to check out the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. We visited all the … [Read more...]

Avatar Exhibit at the Science Fiction Museum—Seattle, Washington Travel

The Science Fiction Museum at the Experience Music Project in Seattle Washington is a museum that I like going back to multiple times. The museum used to have an amazing collection of old science fiction books, with tons of information on the history of science fiction. My favourite part of it was the great props from and exhibits of Star Trek shows. Now, in the main space they have an Avatar exhibit, and a Battlestar Galactica exhibit upstairs. I really loved seeing the Avatar movie, and … [Read more...]

Gasoline Alley at Heritage Park—Calgary, Alberta Travel

There are some places that hold such strong memories in my mind that, that even though their appearance has changed, they'll always feel the same to me. Are there places, maybe ones you visited as a child, that work this way for you? Heritage Park in Calgary is a place that we often visited when I was younger—with friends that I was allowed to invite, or cousins from both sides of my family. Greg and I recently went to Heritage Park and found something quite new—the front entrance was … [Read more...]

It’Sugar! Candy Shop in Atlantic City, New Jersey

During our trip to the USA in September, Greg and I stopped in Atlantic City, New Jersey for a few days. This little candy shop in a mall on the Boardwalk really caught our eye. I like that this candy shop really went all out with their decorations—down to a jelly belly encrusted elephant: I really like how they had this display of a faux Boardwalk: … [Read more...]

Westin Seattle Downtown Review

On our recent trip to the USA we went through Seattle for a few days, because it was cheaper to fly out from there. . .and it is always great to visit the city. For the first day we stayed in the Westin Seattle Downtown, since it was Greg's birthday and we got a good deal on Hotwire. Staying right downtown in Seattle is great because so many things are within walking distance. We were able to take the Monorail and visit Seattle Center (where the museums and the Space Needle is), plus check … [Read more...]

DK Eyewitness NY iPad App Review

When you're travelling to more than one destination at a time, you really need to think about limiting the number of items you pack that will only be used for part of the trip. One thing that comes to mind is a travel guide used for just one destination of many. On our most recent trip to this USA, Greg and I went to 7 different states and over 12 different cities. Can you imagine how heavy and huge our suitcases would have been if we'd taken travel guides with us for each of those? It is … [Read more...]

Fredericksburg Texas Travel —a Little German Town in Central Texas

Fredericksburg Texas is about a 1 hour drive from San Antonio. We stopped by Fredericksburg for the night between Midland and San Antonio—and we were so glad that we did. This little German town has lots to do, including the town centre, which has several blocks of old buildings that have been lovingly kept beautiful. Here, you'll find dozens of little shops, cafés, restaurants (some serving German food and beer, and others serving typical Texas fare), and more. There is a lovely little park … [Read more...]
