About The Product

coffee
Doi Chaang Estates is a local roaster, distributor, and importer for coffee beans produced in Thailand.
Every time we see the packaging, we’re taken back to Southeast Asia, which assuredly has some of the best coffee in the world. The taste of freshly prepared espresso from these beans reminds us of seaside coffee-shops, and the luxury of time spent just sitting in one another’s company. Fair trade, organic, and single-estate, their roasts are like fine wine, but are socially acceptable to slip into your mug at work, or drink first thing in the morning.
Because it’s a single estate and an Arabica strain, Doi Chaang as espresso is all about a full coffee flavour that goes right down to the bottom of the cup. There is no robusta in the mix to boost crema, and because of the lower caffiene content, and the noticible lack of obfuscating bitterness, it’s a smooth clean ride. They produce a variety of roasts, including a peaberry roast that might be our favourite. Their’s something fanciful about it to be sure, but the single-beaned coffee fruit, in this case tastes lucky like the four-leaf-clover.
Brewed as an Americano, there are notes of other flavours, but they are hard to separate or sum-up. Brewed as manual drip, it tastes like a map of that part of the world. There are hints of citrus, but not bright ones, instead it’s the whispering earthiness of rubbed lime leaves. Chocolate, but only on the darker side. Even a hint of green, of tea or the umami tang of asparagus, but it is subsumed into a rich, blockbuster coffee flavour. At near $20 a half pound, it’s a bit of a splurge, but it’s also a novel experience.
