Memorex PurePlay Portable Speaker for iPod and iPhone — Road Trip Essentials

The Memorex PurePlay Portable Speaker for iPod and iPhone is a wonderful travel companion.

I try to make the most of my time in a new (or old) city, and spend most of my day outside exploring. Even so, I do enjoy returning to my hotel room and turning  on some ‘comfort’ music. This is essential when surrounded by unfamiliar food, places, and sleeping and showering quarters. The problem is, even the fancier hotels that claim to have have iPod docks/alarm clocks rarely have all the right adaptors, plugs or whatever else. And, listening to the radio isn’t an option for me. The sound quality of those typical cheap hotel room alarm clocks is appalling. I have taken to listening to music directly from my iPod Touch—sans speakers, because other options weren’t available. Last December/January whilst on a family trip to Honduras, where everyone dispersed during the day and I spent a lot of time in my hotel room (studying for my last semester of university), this device would have come in very handy!

This portable speaker can be plugged in (for longer hotel stays or indoor use), or run off batteries. The battery power is nice for taking this on a picnic, a beach, or camping. I think that this would work really well on a road trip because you can pull it out at rest-stops, your campsites, hotels, or wherever you stop or stay. I wouldn’t recommend this for the only stereo you use indoors, because of the instability of the base—it rocks a bit, which is a minor annoyance—but I think it does a good job of being an on-the-go portable speaker. The ‘case’ is the actual speaker—so you just close the speaker part down over the controls and pop the whole thing in your bag, and you’re ready to go.

I’ve tested this with several different types of music. Typically, rock/classic rock or pop sounds passable on any sort of speaker, and that type of music sounded decent on this one. When I listened to electronica, I was slightly disappointed, though. I’m not saying that the music sounds terrible, I am just saying that this is good for travelling/road-tripping or a day outside when you want something small and easy to use. For use indoors, and also portable, the Memorex  PartyCube is a good option. At only $69, available in black, white and pink, the Memorex Pureplay Portable Speaker ‘Carries Your Tunes’.

I received the PurePlay from Memorex in order to conduct this honest review. I was not compensated in any other way.
