Hi, Being Tazim readers! My name’s Kylie Challenor (well, it was Kylie Timmins up until I got married recently!), and I’ll be your guest blogger for the Home Décor Event today. I currently write my own blog, Flying Ducks, to give me a bit of a mental break from my day job in arts publishing in Brisbane, Australia. I also do a little bit of freelance writing on the side (most recently for online publications such as and BNE: Hot or Not).
To start off, I’d like to give you a little bit of background information to explain why I blog, as well as how my blog has evolved over the 15 months or so since it began. I started Flying Ducks in July 2009 to publicly chronicle the decorating projects that my now-husband and I were undertaking in our two-bedroom apartment in Brisbane. It was really intended for family and friends to see what we were up to, but also to try and add something a little different to the blogosphere — at the time, I couldn’t find many Australian interior decorating blogs that were by non-professionals (but, of course, now I’ve found many!).
Over time, I’ve slowly started to learn how best to photograph a room, and how to focus on small but important details. I’m still learning, and hopefully I’ll buy myself a digital SLR camera one day so I can get even better! One of the things I really love to do is photograph vignettes around my home…
As I slowly blogged my way around the rooms of our home, I gained more followers and got some lovely comments from readers. In the process, I was able to learn a lot of new skills and ideas from other bloggers (both Australian and overseas). Sharing information and the community nature of blogging is something I enjoy immensely. I didn’t expect having a blog to be such a social experience, but it’s turned out that way! It’s not just social for me online, either — I’ve met and made friends with fellow bloggers in my local area, as well as Melbourne and even New York!
Recently, I’ve been inspired by other creative types to branch out from home decorating and dabble in some other pursuits. I’ve tried my hand at fancy cooking, printing, crochet, furniture restoration and sewing, and next month I’m taking a screenprinting class with a fabulous local designer, Thea & Sami. Blogging about these other creative pursuits has opened up my blog up to even more interested readers, and has therefore allowed me to come into contact with some great people I wouldn’t have otherwise met.
I hope you enjoy reading my posts on Being Tazim — feel free to send some comment love my way! Hope you enjoyed the home tour!
