When you hear ‘Vancouver-based artist’ who immediately comes to mind? I can think of several who are well-known, but how local is local? What I mean is, I
can think of a number of great First Nations artists who create art in this city, but they don’t always live here.
One that comes to mind in this category is Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas. What I love about Yahgulanaas’ work is that it is diverse, accessible, and in-your-face. I will discuss his work further at a later date, but here is just one example of his pieces:
This is a piece called “Bone Box” at the Museum of Anthropology at UBC. Another artist I immediately think of is Ken Lum, who also works in a diverse range of media.
Ken Lum’s site-specific work can be seen in various parts of Vancouver. Here is an example of a prominent sign he created in ‘East Van’
And here is a piece he created for the Vancouver Art Gallery Offsite (outdoor) gallery:
You can read about the piece, entitled Shangri-La to Shangri-La, here.
