I have recent experience with long distance moving, really recent—we just packed all of our belongings in Vancouver for delivery in Calgary this past weekend. I also have a lot of experience with other types of moves—from within the city moves, to moves where you must put everything in storage for 1 year while you live elsewhere. Moving long distance is a particularly grueling way to move. I am here to share with you the unique must-do list for a successful long distance move.
Start Planning Early— if you’re hiring movers or moving your belongings yourself, spots may fill up fast for particularly busy times of year. Get quotes from several moving companies or rental truck companies as soon as you know or decide you’re going to be moving long distance.
Do Your Research— narrow down your choices for movers by looking at the estimated costs, insurance coverage, recommendations, and extras. For our move, we were going to be paying by weight, which meant that we needed to get rid of a lot of things in order to keep costs down.
Decide What to Keep and Toss—If you’re paying by weight, you might begin to look at your belongings differently. How much is that nick-nack really worth to you?
Pack Carefully—you won’t be able to pack things in garbage bags or have loose lamps or other things when you’re moving long distance. Be sure to get enough boxes for all your belongings, along with packing materials such as bubble wrap.
