I wanted their relationships to be developed with independance. I started giving them an allowance when they were five. We then had then put part of it in a jar and once a month we would deposit it to their bank account and they got to watch how it grew!

  56. Deb Dorrington says

It will help them live a much more productive and happier life if they really understand what money is all about. We have to teach children that you earn money from working and yes you need to spend to live, but you must save some also. Teach them that living on credit cards is not the answer.

  57. Chalene says

  60. Jeannette Laframboise says

    at

If children are not taught about money, they may end up with some pretty bad spending habits as an adult. I have done my best to teach my youngest (now 11yrs) but not too long ago, he asked for something that was quite expensive. I told him that it was too much money and I didn’t have any to spare. He actually replied: “Just go to the bank machine and get some.” He truly thought that there was a never ending source of cash coming from the machine. It didn’t occur to him that you actually needed to have the money there to begin with… and here I thought I was teaching him well and really making headway…

  61. Sunshine G says

Because understanding money is such a valuable skill and the most useful one around!

I think it is important to teach children about being responsible with money to ensure that they do not end up in way over their heads when older. Children need to learn that money does not grow on trees and that they cannot have everything that they want. They need to learn to think about things and avoid the impulse buy so that they can live comfortably when they are out on their own.
