I’ve worn eyeglasses since I was about 13 years old. Although I was never called four-eyes, I did always feel self-conscious about my glasses. Now, I don’t feel that way at all. With 7 pairs of glasses and counting, I have quite a collection.
I was (and still am) terrible at math. Things started to get complicated when I was in junior high school—I couldn’t read the multiplication table on the wall or see the chalkboard very well. I naturally assumed that this was a problem for everyone, though.

Me trying on a pair of glasses in a store—ended up buying them for $300! yikes!
When I first learned that I needed glasses, we couldn’t afford nice ones—just the cheapest ones possible. Back then, the internet practically didn’t exist, and we weren’t able to purchase stylish, reasonably priced eyeglasses online. I ended up not wearing my glasses very often because I was so embarrassed to do so whilst in school. What happened? Well, my eyes kept getting worse, of course. Now, even though many people choose to wear contacts, I just can’t fathom the idea of sticking my fingers in my eyes, so I’ve always chosen to wear glasses. I do wear them regularly, these days—and have for years. . .since I got some more stylish ones, that is.
Me, with my cousin’s daughter—from grade 11?!
I have discovered in recent years that I can change the look of my outfit by putting on different glasses. I now have 7 pairs that I like to wear—2 that I mainly wear at home, and the others are all of different styles to compliment my mood or overall look. One of my eyeglasses cost me about $300—on sale! I know better now—I buy my glasses online, and I don’t have to wait for a sale, because they are so much cheaper online. If you’re worried about how the glasses you order online will look on you, check out GlassesUSA.com, where there is a virtual mirror so you can see how the glasses will look on you before you make a purchase.
Me in Hong Kong with glasses I had for about 4 years!
When someone asks me what I’d like as a gift, the first thing that comes to mind is for them to order glasses for me. Is this a strange gift? I don’t think so—I love changing out my glasses throughout the day. My at-home pairs are more comfortable, so changing in to them feels like changing in to pyjamas!
