To Do, To File, To Read! — Organizing Your Office {Guest Post}

There should be a designated place for everything in every room. That includes every paper & new item that comes through the door.

Juli Oliver, a  professional organizer from New York, shares her tips on organizing your office (at home or elsewhere).

Office Mess
office after

Takeout or delivery? No time for a lunch break so you have to sit at your desk & eat in? Don’t collect/ save plastic utensils, paper napkins, & take out menus from every single time you ordered.  They take up space in an entire drawer that could be better used for extra office supplies or end they end up as waste in the trash. When ordering just simply ask them NOT to add them to your order. It’s just extra clutter! Have a zip lock bag with just a few pieces & almost all restaurant menus are online.

Drawer
It’s so important to a time commitment of 10, 20, 30 minutes a day to put everything in its place & just go thru that pile that has been adding up or shredding old papers sitting around etc. You would be surprised at how much you can get done in such a short amount of time that you set aside.

Upkeep & maintenance are crucial whether it’s once a week, once a month, or a couple times a year to enjoy a less clutter-free life.

files

Clutter has such a negative impact on our lives & at work. We waste so much trying to find lost information & items. Being organized, forming systems, & executing them give us peace of mind.

Have systems that work for your current projects, notes, & materials. Find what kind of supplies work  better for you- a letter tray/holder,  folders  out where they are visibly seen etc. Having a filing system in place makes a world of difference.  The more categories & subfolders, the better.  With a clear system then it’s very easy to access files- find & put back into its proper place.

office

Mental fog –office performance less than perfect. Stop checking those non-work related distracting emails, personal phone calls/texts while at the office & NO Facebook! Save all that for the end of the day or “reward “yourself 10 minutes for every hour of work.

It’s great to have personal touches to make your office feel more at home, but who really needs to see tons of framed pictures of the family, every single award/achievement you won, your children’s art collection form school for the past few years & one to many green plants collecting dust? Everything in moderation! Keep it simple!
