Be it floods, broken pipes or tanks, a leaking roof, or HVAC leaks, water damages can cause severe emergencies and, at times, deaths. Most properties get destroyed by water annually. It is necessary to act fast by knowing the cause of water damages and putting in suitable measures to prevent a water damage emergency.

How to Protect Yourself and Your Properties in Case of Water Damage Emergency

Ensure You are Safe

Water can cause severe damage to your health if the water is contaminated. It can cause water-borne diseases and also sweep you away. If you notice flood water in your house, switch off the electricity to avoid electrocution. Secure your important documents and electronics by placing them at a top place. You can also call the authority to get evacuated to a safer place.

Identify the Source of Water

Be alert and identify the water problem source and make efforts to prevent further damages. For instance, if a water pipe bursts, ensure you know where the valves are and shut them down. If your area is prone to flooding, secure your home by creating ditches and sandbagging. If you have a leaking roof, look for a professional to check the problem. You can also get more information if your house has suffered damage here.

Clear Your Drains and Ditches

Always ensure your drains are debris-free to avoid water blockages. Areas with lots of trees require regular leaf collection and disposal. Also, make drainages in others areas where rainwater accumulates within the compound. Slope away from the ground along your foundation to disperse water away from your house. Ensure low-lying windows are sealed and replace the old ones to prevent water from entering your home.

Dry Your Stuff Outside

Wet items can cause molds and bad smells if left in a house for days. So, take out the wet furniture, clothes, and carpets to dry. Avoid plugging in your electronics and if they got into contact with water, look for an expert to check if they are in good condition. You can also use humidifiers to dry out wet places. Report any damaged document and get a replacement from the relevant places.

Clean the Entire Area

The water damage aftermath can be overwhelming and also a threat to your health. So, if you can’t handle the situation, seek help from professional cleaners. Throw away damaged stuff or those that you no longer use, clean and dry carpets, and ensure the walls are dry. You can also create air pockets to speed up the drying process inside your house. You can consider re-painting the house to restore its beauty.

If you are in an area prone to floods, it’s always necessary to stay alert and look for ways to prevent damage to your property. However, some instances are unforeseen; thus, you need to act fast before the situation worsens. If the condition is out of your control, look for professionals to check the damage and rectify it.
