A Volume and Weight Scale — Deserted Island Kitchen # 8

At home we have nice thick metal measuring cups and spoons galore—they rattle around in our cupboards and drawers like a pocket-ful of change. But, just like all those pennies that you can never seem to spend, we hardly ever use them. Instead, we measure by weight: it makes it easy to double, halve, and quickly throw together, recipes from around the world. We couldn’t live without our kitchen scale, which lives on our counter with an index card full of conversion factors taped to the inside of the cupboard door.

Escali Amana Scale

This Pana digital scale from Escali measures by volume as well as by weight: punch in the right code, and it does all of the math for you—with good results. It runs on batteries but there’s also an optional plug-in adapter if you have an extra outlet. It’s our measuring tool of choice for travelling and desert island scenarios—though it is a bit big. (If you don’t use many volume based recipes check out some of the portable offerings from Ozeri, which we reviewed last holiday season).
