Over the years we’ve sneakily given a good chef’s knife to our Moms and siblings—now when we’re over cooking dinner there’s always something sharp to cut with! In fact, it seems like with the recent foodie craziness we find good knives in many kitchen drawers. What’s often missing? Something to keep an edge on the knife worthy of the blade.
Made by perhaps one of the best kitchenware companies you’ve never heard of, we’re fans of the Chef’s Choice series of knife sharpeners. They come in a wide array of styles, from manual to electric, from Asian*, to European edges. What makes them ideal for Moms is the fact that they accept so many blades!
The Diamond Hone 464 is the perfect entry level model. Clearly labeled slots indicate steps 1, and 2. The first step has a coarser-toothed sharpener and is good to rapidly re-edge a duller knife, while the second has a fine edge which brings the knife to razor-sharp. Something unique to this type of sharpener, as opposed to something like a Furi Ozitech (our second favourite sharpening gadget), is it’s ability to accept and sharpen serrated knives!
Similar to other Chef’s Choice products, it’s the practical design of this product, rather than its visual aesthetics, that appeal to us. The handle is comfortable to grasp and the build quality is high.
It’s a thoughtful gift if your Mom likes to cook. Though it’s utilitarian, it will make her life a little easier, and it’s something she might have not yet bought for herself.
*Asian edged knives have both a different angle, 10º rather than 20º, and are sharpened one side only. Most of us don’t have any in our kitchen, which is perhaps a shame as they’re fun to work with!

We were given the above knife sharpener in order to conduct our honest review. We were not compensated in any other way.

I totally know what you mean! It took us forever to buy our first sharpening gadget. We used to be really old school and use a sharpening stone et cetera—but the hassle of doing it right meant that we didn't sharpen often. I really like the fact that this is so easy. I think other sharpeners in this line start around $20 online—which isn't too bad.
