Why the #mSummit Made Me Wish I Were a Mom

The mSummit is all about “reinventing today’s savvy working mom.”

The new working mom has become a powerful group that is challenging traditions and taking on the ‘just a mom’ label with a revitalized sense of optimism. These hard working women are well educated, savvy, and balancing lifestyle of family and career.

-Meghan Simington, founder of the mSummit and the Reinventing M Network

Moms sound pretty great, don’t they?

Of course, only certain workshops were specifically mommy-focused (where other people wouldn’t get the topic), so I felt totally comfortable being at the event.

The big draw for this year’s mSummit was Dragon’s Den’s only Arlene Dickinson. Dickinson is also a CEO of Venture Communications and YouInc.com. I shared some pictures and tweets from the VIP events with her, further down. While I didn’t get a chance to see Arlene Dickinson live, I did get to attend several inspiring workshops during the day.

The mSummit was in a beautiful location—the Westin Bayshore, near Stanley Park. There was a breakfast session with Tamara Taggart, Jill Earthy and Sandy Gerber – plus Meghan Simington. And then the career, entrepreneur and lifestyle workshop sessions began.

As a blogger, the PR and Blogger panels in the afternoon especially appealed to me.

The PR Panel with Raj Thandi, MiYoung Lee, Andrea Vance and Kerry Sauriol

The PR panel offered tons of advice on how bloggers and business owners can get promoted on traditional media and otherwise.

A few takeaways:

-don’t be afraid to approach big media

-send concise emails – no scrolling should be involved

“Quality versus quantity is so important.” – @wcfmag (Andrea Vance), when talking about how often to post on your blog.

-focus your press release on you – how did you get where you are? If you’re having trouble crafting a press release that highlights YOU – ask a friend for a bit of help. Your accomplishments may seem minor to you, but others will see how valuable they really are.

-follow up with emails you’ve sent

-headlines are crucial – for press releases, blog posts, and emails

The Blogger Panel with Marilyn Belsham, Dai Manuel, Melissa Carr, Kerry Sauriol and Rebecca Bollwitt.

I will be writing a dedicated post about this workshop because I found it so valuable. Look out for that post in the next few weeks! For now – check out the Storify post for some of the highlights.

So, why did the mSummit make me wish I were a mom, you’re asking?

-moms somehow find the time and energy to do. . .SO much

-there’s a great support system like the mSummit/Reinventing M for moms (and not so much for single people like myself)

-these ladies have a great “club” that I want to be part of

The mSummit took place on Saturday, November 16th at the Westin Bayshore in Vancouver.
I received a press pass to attend the summit but have not otherwise been compensated. I was really excited to be able to experience the motivating, inspirational and educational workshops – so, naturally – all opinions are my own.
