6 Crucial Whitewater Rafting Safety Ideas

Then, you have a perfect idea. Rafting near Denver should be your first option as it is one of the best places you can miss enjoying yourself with family. Whitewater rafting is a refreshing outdoor activity for anyone who loves the outdoors without much experience or the ability to raft. The sporting activity is mainly done along streams with rough waters. Without many skills, you will have some help from rafting experts, so you need not worry much. However, before you head out, it is important to remember these tips to ensure whitewater rafting safety during your trip.

Choose a licensed rafting outfitter

When looking for an outfitter, consider asking questions that will lead you to the right, experienced, licensed and professional one. Know how long they have been in the business. Ask more about their training and what government entity manages the outfitters’ training practices and the issuance of permits. With such info, you will understand whether you will be working with a professional outfitter or not. Therefore, consider picking an experienced outfitter with all requirements and skills. 

Have a floating jacket and helmet

It is a requirement that any person engaging in rafting wear a life jacket or a personal floating device (PFD). However, you need not be convinced that having a life jacket will save your life. You must wear it correctly, with all buckles appropriately clipped, and must fit comfortably to your body but allowing you to breathe without difficulties. You need to have a professional guide to choose the right jacket for you to ensure a perfect fit. Additionally, wear a helmet throughout the rafting sessions. It is as dangerous as riding a bike without a helmet. So, make sure every person onboard wears a fitting helmet. 

Wear the right outerwear for the day

The water is a little chilly as spring starts. It means that everyone wishing to go rafting should have the right outwear. Suitable river shoes, a wet suit, and a splash jacket are necessary to guarantee a comfortable trip without feeling much cold. You don’t necessarily need to purchase such attires since some outfitters rent. If that’s your option, look for a reputable outfitter with gears right for you and your family. In some instances, you might need to have sunscreens and sunglasses with UV protection. 

Hold the paddle properly

You need to learn how to hold the paddle appropriately. A paddle needs to be held with both hands, one hand at the base on the shaft. The other hand should be on the end of the shaft, specifically over the “T” grip section. Placing your hands in the right positions will help you paddle the raft properly. It is always important to ask a professional commercial guide to help you understand the best techniques to hold and use the paddle. 

Stay in the boat

It sounds obvious? It isn’t obvious as you might think since most are the times you will be in the boat and the other swimming. When you are rafting, you have to pay much attention to obstacles on your way. There might be multiple rocks that can pose lots of dangers but do not panic. You should not get your hand off the grip not to float away from the raft. Nevertheless, with an outfitter, you will be guided on what to do in certain situations and how to navigate through bumpy and rough areas.

Know the proper swimming skills

Before participating in rafting, you and your family need to have the right swimming techniques. The sport requires specific swimming techniques like the “downriver swimmers’ position.” It involves lying on your back, your nose and toes facing the sky. You have to learn how to swim effectively to avoid drowning. In addition to practicing the proper technique, you would be in a much better position if your swimming performance is not so far from the average swimming pace of 1:51 Minutes per 100 meters.
