It’s summertime and I’m getting my apartment ready for the arrival of a few guests! Because I live in another province from my immediate family, I often have summer overnight guests who stay between one and 5 days. I want to make my guests’ stay as comfortable as possible for the time they’re staying with me. Little details make all the difference. These essentials don’t cost much money and in fact, you could use things you already have at home.
 Top 10 Essentials for guests
With a list like this, you may run the risk of having your guests over-stay their welcome!

Here is a list of must-haves for making a room comfortable for summer overnight guests:

summer overnight guests
    1. Travel-Sized Toiletries—like shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, deodorant, toothpaste, etc.
    2. Extra Flip-Flops or Slippers—for wearing around the house or after the pool, beach or a shower
    3. Snacks—things like crackers and fruit for late-night snacks
    4. A Stack of Fluffy Towels—including one suitable for the beach
    5. A Clock with an iPhone Dock—preferably. . .they may want to listen to some music or relax in their room for a while without disturbing everyone else
    6. Magazines—different types, especially travel ones
    7. Scented Soy Candles—even having an unlit candle in a room provides a nice scent. Choose something relaxing. Or add a diffuser with a few relaxing essential oils to a little tray in the bedroom.
    8. An Extra Blanket—for cool evenings
    9. A Garbage Bin—It can be embarrassing to have to ask where one is or to traipse your rubbish all over the house just to throw it away.
    10. Cables and Cords—for plugging in a laptop or cellphone

I’d love to know your thoughts—what else would you include in a guest room for your summer overnight guests?

There's some great ideas there! I'd also like to point out another idea if you don't have cables and cords – a power strip so they can plug in their own cables. I had friends visit last month from Texas and I hope I was able to make them feel comfy!

Great list! I also like to put a small water pitcher and glass on the nightstand. I have one where the glass covers the pitcher so it's cute and perfectly designed for a guest room!

I've got everything you listed (usually our guest is my MIL so she brings most of her toiletries, cables, books to read, her own laptop)….candles are out of question for her since some scents trigger migraines….the only thing we are missing is an actual bed….

Great tips! And I love the idea of a clock with an ipod dock – never thought of that. In fact we have a clock like that we aren't using. I think I'm going to move it to the guest room. Thank you!

Great list. Our guest room isn't terribly comfortable (hide-a-bed) but I try and make it more inviting by adding these kinds of extra touches.
